Mining for Cupcakes — Inspiring the Next Generation

February 20, 2026

This week, Vern Goglio has been visiting local classrooms in Nezperce, Idaho, bringing his “Mining for Cupcakes” discussion and activity to students in Grades 2, 3, and 4.

Engaging with youth is such an important part of our industry’s future. Classroom visits like this help students understand the role mining plays in everyday life, spark curiosity about the world around them, and inspire them to think about all the possibilities for how they can engage and contribute.

The students asked thoughtful questions, made great connections, and had a lot of fun discovering how many ores and minerals are needed to make something as simple as cupcakes.

And the best moment of all came from one young student who summed it up perfectly:
“Mining powers the entire world!”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Here’s to learning, laughter, and inspiring the next generation… one cupcake at a time.
